Deadline Drawing Near for Rockport Art Association’s 2009 Fundraiser
“Have You Seen the Movalli at the RAA?”

Tickets Still Available for October 2nd Gala and Drawing to Win Local Artist
Charles Movalli’s Museum-Quality Painting, “Gloucester Harbor II”

The Rockport Art Association is nearing the end of its 2009 fundraising campaign, and wants the public to know there are still tickets available for the chance to win a museum-quality painting which has been generously donated by renowned local artist, author and distinguished member of the RAA, Charles Movalli -- and attend the drawing’s gala celebration on October 2nd.  The successful summer campaign has met its goal of bringing visitors the RAA to see this work and the works of the RAA’s other 250+ artist members, but is still far short of its fundraising goal.

“Gloucester Harbor II” is a vibrant and beautiful 36” x 48” framed painting of historic Gloucester.  The painting is classic Movalli – a strong composition with bold expressive brushstrokes that captures the energy of Gloucester’s working harbor in the 1930s and 1940s.  It’s one of a series of four historic paintings; one is in the Cape Ann Museum collection, and the other two have already been sold to collectors.

“We’ve had visitors from all over the world visit the RAA this summer to see the Movalli painting, and have sold tickets to supporters from Hawaii, Florida, California, and even Israel,” said Carol Linksy, executive director of the RAA.  “But we are still well below our fundraising goal, and we want to remind everyone that there is less than one month left to purchase a ticket (or two) to support the RAA and gain a chance to win this important painting.  And with no more than 1,000 tickets to be sold, you get great odds and you get to attend our gala.  More than ever, we need your support for the RAA’s many programs, which are offered year-round and open to the public.”

In addition to support from individuals, the RAA has received corporate donations from Granite Savings Bank, Carroll K. Steele Insurance Agency, Eastern Copy/Fax Inc., Gorton's of Gloucester, L.P. Connolly Construction, Meineman Architectural Associates, Jose the Painter and Morris Heating & Air Conditioning.  The RAA is pleased to recognize the support of these local businesses, and hopes other companies will follow suit.

“This is an unusually large, and wonderful painting by one of the RAA’s most talented artists,” said Judi Rotenberg, RAA president, artist and gallery owner.  “I actually bought one of the other paintings in this series.  I think everyone should take a chance to win this fabulous painting for only $100, and also help support a very worthy public-spirited arts organization.  Don't miss out on this opportunity!”

Walter Manninen, a nationally known art collector states:  “I've been collecting art for 30 years and never has an opportunity to collect a premier artist’s work for $100 been presented to me.  Get your tickets right away!"

Movalli is one of Cape Ann’s most successful and admired contemporary painters, known not only for his art, but also for his writings on Cape Ann painters.  He holds a doctorate in American literature, and is the author of many books, including the four definitive works on Emile A. Gruppé, who was his mentor and friend.  He has also authored scores of articles on Cape Ann’s art and artists, and won numerous awards for his paintings, which are widely collected by both institutional and private collectors.

The painting will be on display at the Rockport Art Association until October 2, 2009, when a gala for ticket holders and the drawing will be held.  Raffle tickets, which are $100.00 each or 6 for $500, may be purchased at the RAA or by phone.  Visit or call the RAA at 978-546-6604 or email rockportart@verizon.net to purchase your tickets today.
