A lifelong resident of Boston’s North Shore, Ray Crane is inspired by the rich history of the area, and today is best known for his classic maritime paintings that explore the New England coast and Hudson River Valley, and provide a unique perspective on the region’s rivers, islands, harbors and coves.
Through his paintings he strives to instill appreciation for our maritime past and show how this heritage continues to influence the views we see today.
When not painting, he spends time searching through the archives of museums and libraries for information that will result in new works with a unique historical perspective.
A professional artist for more than 30 years, Crane is a graduate of the School of Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts and former artist in residence at Boston’s Museum of Science/Hayden Planetarium. He is a member of the Marblehead, North Shore and Rockport Art Associations, and is represented in several regional galleries.
His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the U.S., and is in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air & Space Museum, as well as many private collections nationwide. It has also appeared in books, magazines and calendars, and won numerous awards.
