There is something special about the houses on Cape Ann. The light, the clustered shapes, the rooftops.
In this workshop, we will paint from a series of photos provided to you. The idea is to push the paint way beyond just copying. Emily will provide exercises that will help you find values, push color, loosen edges, layer paint, and find a dramatic composition.
Participants may paint in acrylic or oil. All skill levels are welcome. Space is limited.
Suggested materials:
• Newsprint pad (important for thumbnail sketches and composition planning)
• Vine charcoal or 7B, 8B, 9B pencils (very soft dark)
• Small mat board cut into two “Ls” (makes a view finder)
• Large paper/pads of "canvas paper” or other paper designed to take acrylic or oil, or Arches paper for oils ($$$)
• Drawing board to affix paper for studies
• Low adhesive artist’s tape (not blue tape)
• Palette (can be a paper palette, wood, or glass)
• Palette knife(s) - varied sizes, possibly including silicone rubber painting spatulas
• Brushes: varied sizes (go larger!?) - flats, rounds, and at least one 1-inch hardware store-style brush
• Oil or acrylic paints –
Using a warm and cool of each primary is recommended, and then a very dark brown to mix blacks, and titanium white and/or zinc white.
For oil painters:
• Oil painting medium (this can be Gamsol, walnut oil, etc.) and Gamsol for cleanup and thinning.
